Indian women’s football team will be competing at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. The official draw was held on Thursday last week and saw India take a spot in group B with Chinese Taipei and Thailand. With a global rank of 60, India is the worst-ranked team in Group B. Both Chinese Taipei and Thailand boast better ranks coming in at 37th and 44th, respectively.

India has only competed in two editions of the competition. They finished eighth at Bangkok in 1988 and ninth at the Incheon Asian Games in 2014. The competition made its debut in the grandest Asian sporting event in 1990 while the men have participated regularly in the competition since its inception in 1951. However, both Indian men’s and women’s teams had missed the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta due to rank-based restrictions from the Indian Sporting Ministry. The criteria were relaxed this year to facilitate India’s participation in men’s and women’s football at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Reigning champions Japan have been placed in Group D. Three-time gold medalists China and Republic of Korea are in Group A and Group C, respectively. It will be interesting to see if the Indian women can make a say in this edition of the tournament.
